Abstract

<PICT:0475934/IV/1> <PICT:0475934/IV/2> An acetylene generator comprises an open-topped water container 1, an open-based bell-member consisting of a depending tube 6 terminating in a flared bell mouth 7 and closed at the top by a detachable cap 9, a tubular cage 23 for carbide detachably fitted in the tube 6 and protruding into the bell-mouth 7, and a fire trap 15 consisting of a water seal 14 through which the gas delivered from an outlet at the top of the tube 6 is passed before entering the pipe-line. The base of the container 1 is preferably conical and fitted with a sludge valve. The cage 23 is filled with carbide, and lowered down the tube 6, where it rests upon retaining straps 26. The container 1 is then filled with water to the level 27.
