Abstract

<PICT:0720882/III/1> In an azotometer comprising a vessel for collecting gas fitted with a pipe leading to a reservoir 11 for aqueous alkali, an inlet pipe for gas, and an upwardly directed neck, the neck is provided with an extension 1 bent through approximately 180 degrees, the outlet 3 is attached by means of a flexible tube 4 to a reservoir 5 for sealing fluid, and a side pipe 7 is attached near the outlet. When used in the determination of nitrogen in organic compounds by the Dumas combustion method, tap 6 is opened and reservoir 5 containing mercury is lowered so that the level falls below the side tube 7; reservoir 11 is raised so that the alkali rises to the top of the azotometer and the tap 6 is closed; reservoir 5 is then raised to close the side tube connection, the tap 6 is opened and the mercury level adjusted to mark 8. After use in the conventional manner, the mercury level is lowered to below the side tube, and reservoir 11 is raised to sweep out the nitrogen through the tube 7. The arrangement avoids leakage of alkali through a tap at the top of the neck of the azotometer.
