Abstract
372,411. Washing smoke and fumes. CUTHBERTSON, J., 55, South Norwood Hill, London. Nov. 3, 1931, No. 3424. [Class 55 (ii).] In the washing of furnace gases by passing them vertically upwards through a continuous horizontal film of water, the water, after the passage of the gas, falls in the form of drops through the ascending gases. The gases from a conduit 5 enter a cleansing vessel 17 by way of a chamber 7 containing a rotary atomizer 9 which projects a mist of water into the gases to facilitate the gravitational removal of solid particles contained therein. The gases then pass through the horizontal film of water 19 which issues from a slit in a pipe 21 arranged circumferentially inside the vessel 17. The latter is also fitted with a spiral plate 25 to reduce the velocity of the gases and it serves to carry perforated trays 27 containing chalk, slaked lime or charcoal. The gases are further washed by means of steam injectors 29. In a modification of the slit pipe 21, a film of water is produced between a pair of conical surfaces and such a film may be formed at the upper end of the vessel 17, the gases first passing through a perforated cone 31.
