Abstract

23,921. Spicer, F. H. Oct. 15. Washing. - A device for cleaning the smoke and vapours given off from furnaces, which is intended to be used either in conjunction with or in place of a chimney, comprises essentially a downwardly-inclined smoke pipe leading to a substantially vertical down-take, means for projecting streams of water along the smoke pipe, and means for imparting a gyratory movement to the water as it enters the down - take. Smoke from the chimney is entrained into a downwardlyinclined smoke pipe located below a damper n<1> by a water ejector b, which may be continually supplied with water from mains, or supplied by means of a pump d which forms part of a closed circuit between the filter bed e' of a depositing-tank e and the ejector. The streams of water in the lower end of the smoke pipe are given a helical movement as they enter a funnelshaped chamber g by means of guide-blades f, or by an independent supply of water which is introduced in a tangential direction. The downtake is preferably of greater cross-sectional area than the pipes leading to and from it, and is fitted with conical or pyramidal baffles i, j. Additional streams of water may be supplied through ring nozzles c, g, k. The down-take may discharge directly into the chamber e or through the medium of a rotating tank o having internal mixing-vanes, which may be adapted to propel the mixture. Fig. 1<a> shows a modified form of down-take in which the inner baffles partly enter one another, and are provided with apertures j<2> which progressively decrease in area towards the bottom.
