SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 759,731, dated May 10, 1904.

1 To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Josern FURNAs Minus, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paris, in the county of Lamar and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoke-Consumers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in apparatus for arresting and consuming smoke and fumes from furnaces, coke-ovens, kilns, and the like.
The object of my invention is to provide a device of this character which will be simple in construction, durable in use, elficient in operation, and comparatively inexpensive to produce.
With this and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a diagrammatical view of my improved fumearresting and smoke-consuming apparatus. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the arresting and consuming device. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view taken on the line a; m of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1 denotes a pipe or conductor leading from the smoke box or space of a steam-boiler furnace or the like, 2,to the casing 3 of a fan or blower, which is adapted to suck or draw the smoke, gases, and other products of combustion from said furnace and discharge the same through a connecting-pipe or conductor 4: into my improved arresting and consuming device 5. The said device 5 comprises a lower portion or tank 6, an upper portion or drum 7, and areduccd connecting portion or neck 8. The
In said chamber or drum adjacent to its lower end is a horizontally disposed partition 10, which is preferably inclined slightly toward a large central opening 11. The piped extends through the bottonr9 and then up through the opening 11 in the partition 10 and has its open end turned up to discharge the smoke and gases into the space 12 in the drum 7 above thepartition 10. The opening 11 is of greater diameter than the pipe 4, so that a surrounding space is provided between them to permit the smoke to pass from the space 12 down into the space 13 below the partition 10.
Projecting vertically and concentrically through the tank 10, the neck 8, and the end of the pipe t is a water-pipe 14, upon the upper end of which, just above the open end of the pipe 1, is a discharge-nozzle 15, which is adapted to spray the smoke and, gases as they are discharged into the space or chamber 12. Upon said pipe 14: adjacent to the upper end of the neck 8 is another discharge-nozzle 16, which again sprays the smoke and gases as they enter the space or chamber13. The water from said sprayer-nozzle runs down the sides of the drum 7 and the inclined partition and bottom of the-same and then through the connecting-neck S into the water-tank 6, which is provided with an overflow pipe or outlet 17 in its side wall adjacent to its upper end. An outlet pipe or stack 18 for steam, hot air, and other gases is also provided in the upper end of said tank 6. The lower portion of the neck 8 projects down into the tank 6 and has its open end below the level of the water in said tank in order to wash the smoke and gases a third time before they are permitted to pass off to the atmosphere through the pipe or stack 18. If desired, the lower end of said pipe or neck 8 may be provided with a laterally-projecting annular flange 8*, formed with perfo rations 8", through which the smoke must pass and be divided into small bubbles to effect a thorough washing of the same. This flange 8 is particularly effective when the sprayers 15 and 16 are not used.
The operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood from the foregoing dcscription, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. It will be seen that when the fan or blower in the casing 3 is rotated by steam or electrical power or in any suitable manner it will draw or suck the smoke, gases, and other products of combustion from the furnace and discharge them into the device 5, in which they will be thoroughly sprayed and washed to remove all impurities. Instead of spraying them with water I may inject steam into the spaces or chambers 12 and 13 through the nozzles 15 and 16. The water from the overflow 17 may be used for heating purposes, or it may be pumped into a tank to be again used by the sprayers.
It will be understood that the device may be used in connection with any smoke-stack by providing the same with a damper and connecting the pipe 2 with the stack below said damper, so that the device may be thrown into and out of use by simply operating said damper.
While I have shown and described my invention in the form best known to me at the present time, I wishit understood that various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Adevice of the character described comprising a drum or chamber having an apertured partition, a discharge-pipe for smoke, gases and the like projecting through the aperture in said partition but spaced from the latter, a sprayer-pipe projecting into said drum and said smoke-pipe, and discharge-nozzles on 7 said sprayer-pipe above and below said partition, substantially as described.
2. A device of the character described comprising a water-tank having an outlet for water and an outlet for air, steam andother gases, a drum having an apertured partition dividing the same into upper and lower spaces or chambers, a reduced portion or neck connecting said drum and said tank and projecting into thelatter below its water-line, a smoke and gas discharge pipe projecting into said drum and through the aperture or opening in its partition, a sprayer-pipe projecting through said neck and said smoke-pipe, and discharge-nozzles upon said sprayer pipe in the spaces or compartments above and below said partition, substantially as described.
3. A device of the character described comprising a water-tank, an overflow outlet-pipe for said tank, a gas -discharge pipe or stack for said tank, a drum having a centrally-inclined bottom, a reduced portion or neck connecting said drum and said tank and projecting into the latter below its water-line, a centrally-inclined partition in said drum having a central opening, a smoke and gas discharge pipe projecting through the bottom of said drum and through the opening in said partition,a concentrically-disposed water-pipe projectin g through said neck and said smoke-pipe, a sprayer-nozzle on the upper end of said waterpipe above the open end of said smokedischarge pipe, and a sprayer-nozzle on said waterpipe adjacent to the upper end of said neck, substantially as described.
