SMOKE-CONSUMER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 16, 1915.
Application filed March 6, 1914. Serial No. 823,000.
I To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMns E. SYKEs, acitizen of the United States, residing at Snohomish, in the county of Snohomish and State of VVashington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Smoke-Consumers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved smoke consuming apparatus, the object of the invention being to provide an improved device of this character which is cheap and simple, which is easily operated, and which may be readily kept in order.
The invention consists in the construction combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1. is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of my improved smoke consuming apparatus. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the same on the plane indicated by the line aa of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of the same on the plane indicated by the line bb of Fig. 1.
In accordance with my invention 1 provide a casing l which is here shown as of oblong rectangular form and which in practice is preferably made of plate iron but may be made of sheet iron or other suitable material. At the rear end of the casing is a manhole 2 and a disk 3 for closing the said manhole. The lower-portion of the casing forms a water compartment 4: which is provided with an outlet 5 at the front end of the casing and which is spaced a suitable distance above the bottom of the said compartment so as to keep water at a desired level therein. Above the water compartment, at asuitable height is a horizontally arranged screen 6 which is coextensive in width with the casing and extends from the rear wall thereof to within a short distance from the front wall 7 of the casing. A vertical partition plate 8 is arranged in the casing at a slight distance from its front wall. The screen 6 extends to the said partition plate and the latter projects above and below said screen. An inclined washer plate 9 is arranged in the casing with its lower end on the upper end of the partition plate 8 and its upper end secured to the top 10 of the casing and at a slight distance to the rear of the smoke intake opening 11. An inclined screen 12 which is substantially at right angles to the washer plate is arranged slightly above said washer plate and at a suitable distance in front of the smoke intake opening 11, this screen extending to the top of the casing and also extending from side to side thereof. A washer plate 13 which is inclined and is arranged at substantially right angles to the washer plate 9 extends from the front wall of the easmg downwardly and rearwardly to within a slight distance of the washer plate 9. An inclined baffle plate 1 1 is arranged below the washer plate 9 and extends downwardly and rearwardly therefrom to a point a slight distance above the screen 6 and in front of the rear Wall of the casing. The rear wall of the casing has a discharge opening 15 a suitable distance from its upper end.
A water pipe 16 is provided with a sprayer arm 17 which extends across and is arranged at the upper end of the washer plate 9. Similar pipes 18 are provided with sprayer arms 19 which are arranged near the upper side of the screen 12 on opposite sides thereof and extend across the same and are provided with jet openings to discharge jets of water on opposite sides of said screen 12. A water pipe 20 is also provided which has a sprayer arm 21 that extends across the upper side of the inclined washer plate 13 and is arranged to discharge jets of water on said washer plate.
In the operation of my invention the smoke which is admitted at a is forced through the screen 12 and under the washer plate 13 and down through the duct 28 into the water compartment 4: and then upwardly through the screen 6 into the compartment 29 and under the baffle plate 1 1 into the compartment 30 and hence to the discharge opening 15. As the smoke enters the smoke consumer it is acted upon by the spray of water from the arm 17 of the pipe 16 and washed. so that the solid particles are caused to drop on the washer plate 9 and to be carried downwardlv thereon and the smoke is also washed by the spray from the arms 19 of the pipes 18 as it passes through the screen 12 so that a further separation of the solid particles from the smoke body is effected by the screen and as the smoke strikes the washer plate 13 which forms a battle, it is further washed by the spray from the arm 21 of the pipe 20, washer plate 13 and being discharged on the lower portion of the washer plate and -finally therefrom down through the duct28 into the water in the Water compartment 4. As the smoke passes up from the water compartment it is caused to go through the screen 6 which arrests such particles as it may still carry, the smoke then striking the baflie plate and is discharged at 15.
Having thus described my invention, I claim':
The herein described smoke consumer having a smoke intake at its upper side and a discharge opening at one end, an inclined V Washer plate having its upper end connected to the upper side of the casing at a point between the intake and discharge openings, and having its lower end spaced'from the opposite end of the casing and provided with a downwardly extending vertical partition plate, the lowerportion of the casing forming a precipitating chamber and said partition plate extending down into said precipitating chamber, a screen forming. the top of the'said precipitating chamber and extending from said partition plate to the end of the casing having the discharge opening, a screen extending downwardly from the top of the casing toward the inclined Washer plate and arranged in rear of the intake opening, a second inclined washer 35 plate arranged above the rear portion of the first named washer plate and connected at its upper side to the rear side of the caslng, means to spray water on said washer plates and on the second named screen, and a JAMES E. SYKES.
