475,736. Casting or forming reproductions of surfaces or articles. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd. (United Shoe Machinery Corporation) April 24, 1936, No. 11668. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group XV] In forming a cast of an article, such as a foot, or in retaining an impression of the shape of a surface in a mobile medium, an impression is made in a mass of strongly magnetizable particles such as steel balls 90, a magnetic field is applied to cause the particles to remain in their impressed condition, and a cast is made in the impression so formed. The balls 90 are held on an adjustable support 35 in a container 10 mounted over an electromagnet 20. Before casting, the impression is lined with a sheet 94 of rubber or other stretchable material. The cast may be made in plaster of Paris or other plastic material. A cavity may be formed in the cast by a spirit level 96 so that the natural position of the cast can be subsequently reproduced by placing a level in the cavity and adjusting the cast until the cavity is horizontal. The support 35 may comprise a fixed inclined section 36, a pivoted middle section 42 and a horizontal section 62. The section 42 is pivoted on trunnions 44 and is pivoted to the section 62. The section 42 is formed with depending ears 48 engaging a link 52 connected to a bolt 53 which is engaged by a depending arm 56 pivoted on trunnions 58 and pivotally supporting the section 62. The height of the section 62 and consequently the inclination of the section 42 is adjusted by moving the bolt 53 by a screw-threaded shaft 74 pivotally mounted in a bracket 78 and provided with a hand wheel 88. The side walls 12 of the container are of iron, steel, or other strongly magnetizable material and are mounted on, or are elongations of, the cores of the electromagnet. The end walls and other parts may be of relatively non-magnetizable material such as brass or aluminium.
