Abstract

An airtight flexible bag filled with a particulate material 2 is used to support a flexible mat 1 impregnated with a polymer resin that is cured by ultra-violet light 4. When a limb or object 3 is placed on the mat the cushion is deformed to take its shape and, by applying a vacuum to compact the filling in the cushion, the deformed shape is retained and holds the mat in a similar conformation. It is then possible to irradiate the mat with ultra-violet light, after the limb or object has been removed.

Description

2350815 Support Member.
1. This invention relates to a means by which a flexible advanced polymer impregnated mat is supported during curing by ultra-violet light, to retain the shape of a limb or other physical object against which it has been brought into intimate contact.
2. The use of ultra-violet light can be injurious to some individuals and also generates heat. When used in close proximity to an individual the heat can cause discomfort and therefore it is desirable to irradiate the impregnated mat in a location separate from that in which the moulding process was conducted.
3. According to the present invention the shape of the said impregnated mat is retained during curing by a deformable airtight cushion filled with fine particulate matter, as disclosed by J.S.Bumett 1591024 dated 12th August 1981.
4. The mat is laid on the deformable cushion, which is then used to urge or wrap the mat into intimate contact with the limb or physical object, By withdrawing the air from the cushion whilst in intimate contact with the limb or object, the filling material is made firm and holds the mat in its formed shape for irradiation by ultra-violet light.
5. A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:Figure I shows in cross sectioned elevation, a foot resting on a layer of impregnated mat supported by a deformable cushion. Figure 2 shows the mat in cross sectioned elevation under irradiation and supported by the deformable cushion that has been compacted by the evacuation of air.
2 Referring to the drawing in Fig 1. The mat 1 is placed on the deformable cushion 2 supporting an individual's foot 3. Air is removed from the cushion 2 by a pump (not shown). When the cushion 2 has been compacted by evacuation of the air, the individual's foot is removed and the mat is irradiated by an ultra-violet light source Fig 2. 4 to cause the impregnated polymer in the mat to cure.

1. A means to retain the shape of a limb or physical object from which a subsequent moulding may be made.
2. A means to support a material in intimate contact with a limb or physical object.
3. A means to retain the shape of a flexible advanced polymer mat that has been in intimate contact with a limb or physical object.
4. A means to safely cure by ultra-violet light an impregnated mat that is retained in the shape of a limb or physical object to which it has been formed.
