474,363. Fluid-pressure servomotors. COCKBURNS, Ltd., and MAcNICOLL, D. Jan. 27, 1937, No. 8205/36. [Class 135] A servomotor for operating a slide valve comprises a pair of aligned pistons 2, 3 coupled by a tubular spindle 17 connected to the valve 14. The control spindle 1 which is manually operated by a screw and nut or other gear, carries control valve members 4, 6 adapted to cooperate with seats on the pistons so that in the event of the power supply failing the pistons may be moved bv direct mechanical action. Motive fluid is admitted between the pistons and leaks past them to chambers 12, 13, the exhaust from which is controlled by the valves 4, 6. Exhaust fluid passing the valves 4, 6 escapes through passages 15, 22 in the pistons to an annular chamber 16 surrounding the control spindle and thence passes through a passage 18 in the control spindle to a chamber 19 provided with an escape passage 21. The piston 3 is provided with a sealing surface 8 adapted to engage a corresponding seat on the casing when the piston is raised and the main valve is in the closed position.
