Abstract

Coarsely crystallized ammonium bicarbonate is obtained by introducing into a solution of ammonium bicarbonate which is saturated at ordinary temperature, while keeping the solution cool, a solution of normal ammonium carbonate and gaseous carbon dioxide in such amounts and so slowly that the crystal nuclei present in the solution are able to grow to the desired grain size. According to a modification, a part of the necessary gaseous carbon dioxide is reacted with the solution of normal ammonium carbonate before its entry into the crystallizing vessel.
