Abstract

472,874. Wrapping-machines. VERPACKUNGS-AUTOMATEN GES., and WOLTER, F. Jan. 7, 1937, No. 448. [Class 94 (i)] The machine wraps regular articles or irregular articles such as cigars, tooth brushes, sweets, &c. The wrapping material is drawn from a drum 1 past a roller 3, and a guide channel 4, which forms it into a U-shape in cross-section within the channel. Articles 6 are introduced into the paper trough by a feeder 8, and the paper is folded over at the top to form a tube. The tube passes through a ring-shaped member 10, Fig. 3, consisting of a metal core having a helical spring 10b loosely wound on it. The spring bears upon the wrapper and causes it to conform to the shape of the articles. Heating members 9, 9a advance and press the longitudinal seam and the space between the articles respectively, causing the formation shown at x, Fig. 6. Prior to the action of the members 9, folders pass through slot 13a in the channel to tuck in the sides of the wrapper to facilitate the formation of bellows folds. The heating elements are withdrawn and grippers 2, Figs. la and 7, advance and seize the flattened sleeve portion, and draw it to the right. The jaws 2a of the grippers are formed with teeth 15 and grooves 16 to form transverse indentations 17, and a cutter 20 forms a longitudinal slot 17a, by which means the ends of the sleeve are formed in two parts to facilitate tearing open. Shears 21 sever the sleeve into separate packets and the end pieces may be folded on to the ends.
