Pleating.-An apparatus for forming filter wads for cigars, cigarettes, tobacco pipes, &c. comprises means for creasing or folding a strip of material transversely into regular or irregular waves, removing the strip from the creasing or folding mechanism, and then compressing it to the desired cross-section for insertion in an enclosing tube or wrapper. The material used may be a composite one, such as that described in Specification 236,957, [Class 130, Tobacco], or materials such as referred to in Specification 311,827, [Class 130, Tobacco], and described in Specifications 311,831; and 311,832, [Class 130. Tobacco]. In the apparatus shown, a strip a of material is cut off and fed over a table b having a slot in which are disposed parallel needles c<1> - - c<4> carried by a fixed support j. The material is depressed between the needles c<1>- - c<4> by needles d<1> - - d'" the stems of which slide in fixed guides f and are actuated through levers h by cams g on a rotary shaft. The central needle d<3> is first depressed, then the pair d<2>, d<4>, and finally the outer pair d', d<5>. A cam-actuated stripping plate i pushes the folded material into position between a pair of jaws k, k', which are actuated through levers n, n' by cams o on a shaft o' and compress the folded material into a circular,- square, or other wad as shown in Fig. 10. A table p carrying the compressing mechanism is then raised by a cam p<1> into line with a receiving tube q, and the wad is transferred into an enclosing tube or wrapper by a plunger r actuated by a cam r' and lever r'. In a modification, Fig. 12, both sets of folding needles s<1>, t', &c. are stationary and the needles are bent as shown, the material a being moved laterally on the needles by means of a comb w to effect the folding, or the needles may be moved laterally while the material is held by a fixed comb. The oppositely-disposed series of needles may be symmetrically arranged and adapted to co-operate with a pair of supply spools and feeding devices; on the movement of a stripping comb in one direction, a length of strip from one supply spool is fed between the needles at one end to form the folds and to eject a folded length at the other end, while on the movement of the comb in the other direction a length of strip from the other spool is fed in and ejects the previously folded length.
