Abstract

394,340. Filter tips for cigarettes. WIX, A., 338, Goswell Road, London, and MAY, R. F., 9, Manor Road, Potters Bar, Middlesex. Dec. 21, 1931, No. 35352. [Class 130.] Filter tips are formed from a strip of material fed through formers in which it is folded over at one or both edges. Each former consists of upper and lower plates having the marginal portions gradually folded inwardly. Successive formers are of decreasing width and are separated by pressure rollers 6. Finally, the folded strip, of spiral or twin-spiral cross section, is compressed in passing through the tube 14, severed by the knife 26, and the sections transferred to chambers 27a in an intermittently rotating disc 27. From the latter they are ejected by a plunger 33 into a reciprocating device 34 for inserting the tips into paper tubes or mouthpieces. A cam 28 working through ratchet-and-pawl gearing effects the movement of the disc 27, and through linkwork 35a 35, that of the plunger 33. To prevent the laterally-moving severed tip from fouling the uncut end, the disc 27 is moved axially during its rotation by forming interengaging teeth 30, 27c on the boss of the disc and the adjoining frame.
