[Class 38 (v)] A switch in the handle of an electric iron comprises a plunged 13 fitted with a packing 14 which fits closely in a narrow bore 12 and when moved to the right allows a spring 24 to act through a member 18 and rods 19 to move a contact 23 into engagement with contacts 8 to close the circuit. On release, the plunger 13 moves slowly to the left due to a spring 15 as air leaks through a narrow channel 17 until the packing 14 reaches a wide bore 11 and moves rapidly to engage member 18 and open the circuit. A pivoted lever 26 surrounds the plunger 13 and may be pressed by the thumb during ironing to hold the plunger frictionally in the closed position.
