Abstract

[Class 108 (iii)] [Also in Group XXIV] A tensioning device for driving chains and the like comprises a laminated spring in which leaves A, C are anchored at E and leaves B, D at F, the anchorages being fixed or constrained so that as the spring flexes the leaves slide over one another. The outer leaf A is formed as a slipper to press against the chain. The spring may comprise (1) a simple pair of leaves, of which the inner has the greater curvature ; or (2) a single leaf interposed between a pair such as A, C ; or (3) any number of leaves. Friction material may be interposed between the leaves. The free end of the outer leaf A may be bent round at A<1> to engage the pin F. The free end of one or more of the leaves may be urged towards the opposite end, or towards the free end of one or more other leaves, by a spring H. Preferably a clip G fastened to the free end of the innermost leaf is acted on by the spring H. The clip G is formed with lugs G<1> to keep the leaves together. In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the slotted plate K is slidable on the pin E and is connected at K<1> to the leaf D. The spring H acts through a pivoted link at K<3>, so that as the laminated spring flexes and the relative sliding and thus the damping increases, the pressure between the leaves produced by the spring H is decreased. The spring H may be a compression spring acting through a linkage. Specification 273,823, [Class 80 (i)], is referred to.
