Abstract
470,208. Centrifugal pumps. SOUTHERN, J., FRANKLIN, A. C., and WORTHINGTON-SIMPSON, Ltd. June 22, 1936, No. 17279. [Class 110 (i)] A water-ring pump 8, mounted with and priming a centrifugal pump 3, is unloaded when pump 3 is primed by release of its sealing-water through a valve controlled from the suction of pump 3, this valve returning the sealing-water when gas or air enters the suction. The pump 8 has a chamber 14 for reserve sealing-water, a suction chamber 18, and a delivery chamber 19. Chamber 19 connects with a trap connected to atmosphere and returning water to chamber 14. A valve 39 controls passages 20, 21 leading to the rotor chamber 13, passages 29, 30, 31 leading to chamber 14 and passages 32, 34 leading to chamber 18, passage 32 leading also to float chamber 41 in the suction of pump 3. Float 44 is connected by a lost-motion link 51 and centreless levers 46 to valve 39. When float 44 is down, as shown, chambers 13, 14 are connected together, and chambers 18 and 41. When pump 3 is primed, float 44 rises and passage 21 supplying make-up water is closed, passage 32 being open to atmosphere. The sealing-water will be discharged into chamber 14 and pump 8 relieved of all load, merely revolving in air. Admission of gas or air to the suction float chamber 41 will return valve 39 and restore sealing-water to pump 8.
