Abstract

468,628. Valves ; cylinders and pumps. KIPFER, P. Jan. 3, 1936, No. 319. Convention date, Jan. 3, 1935. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] Exhaust ports 4 at the upper end of the cylinder are controlled by the upper edge of a sleeve valve 2, ports 8 in which control, together with the piston, scavenging - air inlet ports 7 and combustion air or mixture inlet ports 10, so as to close the latter after the valve has passed its maximum velocity on its up-stroke. The sleeve valve ports 8 may be divided into two rows as shown. The ports in the cylinder and sleeve valve, both for inlet and exhaust, have the edges towards which the gases flow rounded off, whereas the sides from which the gases flow are made sharp-edged. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also the following subject-matter : The scavenging and combustion air or mixture may be supplied by compressors driven by the engine or an auxiliary motor, or by a turbo-compressor driven by the exhaust gases, and the mixture may be formed externally of, or within the cylinders. The exhaust gases from cylinders whose exhaust periods overlap little or not at all may be collected in a common spiral housing of a corresponding turbine rotor, or each cylinder has its own sector in the same turbine rotor. In radial-cylinder engines, the exhaust turbine compressor is arranged centrally with respect to the crank shaft, the exhaust gases being led through radial pipes from the cylinders to the corresponding turbine sectors, and the scavenging or combustion air or mixture being introduced directly into the cylinders through short connections from the turbocompressors. In engines with the cylinders in rows, the exhaust turbo-compressors are connected up laterally of the rows, or between them, with their axes in planes at right angles to the crank shaft, and so that the shortest conduits are obtained for all connections. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
