[Class 8 (i)] [Also in Group XXVII] In an internal-combustion engine, reciprocating compressor, or like apparatus comprising a cylinder or working chamber to which a charge of air, gas, or gas mixture is to be admitted, the charge is increased by providing each cylinder or working chamber with at least one rotation chamber which communicates with the inlet of the cylinder and affords an uninterrupted annular space around the outer wall of the chamber, means to lead air or gas into the chamber in such a manner as to cause its rotation, and one or more outlet openings at or near the outer periphery leading to the cylinder inlet. In a four-stroke engine, Fig. 3, the charge is admitted to the annular rotation chamber 10 by tangential openings 12 in a conduit 11 and is conveyed to an inlet chamber 6 in the cylinder head by a conduit 9 leading tangentially from the periphery of the chamber 10. The effective area of the openings 12 may be varied by means of a sliding sleeve on the conduit. In a modification, the conduit 9 enters the chamber 6 tangentially at its periphery. In a two-stroke engine, Figs. 7 and 9 a charge compressed below the piston, as described in Specification 536,694, [Group XXVII], is transferred through a conduit 19 entering the rotation chamber 21 tangentially, and the inlet valves 22 are located in pockets 25 in a circular wall 23. In another form, Fig. 10, the transfer conduit 19 enters the chamber 21 centrally and is provided with tangential admission slots 26. In further forms, (a) the conduit 19 enters the chamber 21 tangentially and draws in air through a non- return valve and a central tube having tangential slots such as 26 ; (b) a single inlet valve 29, Fig. 14, is arranged below a wall 23 below which are fitted tangential baffles 30 ; (c) the rotation chamber 21, Fig. 16, is substantially conical, the transfer conduit 19 entering tangentially at the narrow upper end of the chamber and the inlet valves 22 being near the periphery of the wide end. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states also that the outlet gases from the engine, compressor &c. may be directed into rotation chambers such as those described. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
