Abstract

468,185. Discharge apparatus; wireless signalling. TOULON, P. M. G. Nov. 13, 1936, No. 31113. Convention date, Nov. 13, 1935. [Classes 39 (i) and 40 (v)] In a known form of cathode-ray frequency multiplier shown in Fig. 1, a beam of electrons generated by the electron gun 2, 3, 4 is deflected by plates 5, 51, 6, 7 in a circular path and falls on the apertured screen 8, which divides the beam into a number of clusters of electrons ; according to the invention, the screen 8 is replaced by a number of pairs of deflecting plates 18, 18<1>, 19, 19<1>, Fig. 2, which deflect the beam periodically and alternately in different directions. The loss of electrons intercepted by the screen 8 is thus avoided. The sets of plates a, b are connected together and to sources of opposite potential by leads 20, 21, so that deflecting fields of opposite sign exist between adjacent pairs of plates. The clusters of electrons are concentrated by an electron lens, or by plates 9 ... 12 energized in opposite phase to the plates 5, 5<1>, 6, 7, onto a collecting electrode which may form a receiving or transmitting antenna. The deflected clusters of electrons are arranged to fall alternately on the ends 13, 14 of the antenna and maintain it in oscillation. The antenna is water-cooled by pipes 15, 16 one of which acts as a lead to a source of positive potential. A spherical or parabolic mirror 17 is provided behind the antenna. If the generated frequency differs only slightly from a received frequency rectification occurs at the antenna and a current varying at the intermediate frequency is produced in lead 16, the tube acting in this manner as a heterodyne receiver.
