Abstract
316,579. Westinghouse Lamp Co., (Assignees of Slack, C. M.). July 31, 1928, [Convention date]. R÷ntgen-ray tubes; vacuum tubes.-In order to produce X-rays of high frequency or highvelocity cathode rays, X-rays are caused to impinge on a cathode liberating secondary electrons, the velocity of which is increased by the difference of potential between this cathode and a secondary target on which they impinge. Fig. 1 shows the invention applied to an X-ray tube. From the cathode 2, consisting of a coil of tungsten or tantalum mounted in a focussing cup 8 and electro-static shield 9, electrons are emitted to strike a disc of tungsten &c. mounted in a copper block 10, which also forms the anode, and inclined to direct the X-rays generated against a second cathode 16 connected to the cathode 2 and shaped to focus the electrons emitted on to a secondary target 18 mounted in the block 10. In a modification the secondary cathode is considerably larger than the primary cathode and surrounds it, only one target being employed. Fig. 3 shows an arrangement for generating high-velocity cathode rays. In addition to primary and secondary cathodes 23 and 24 arranged as shown in Fig. 1 a tertiary cathode 25 is provided which directs the liberated electrons through a tubular anode 27 to a thin glass window 30 in the tube.
