Abstract

383,433. Changing frequency. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd., Marconi House, Strand, London.- (Assignees of Salzberg, B. ; Rocky Point, Long Island, New York, U.S.A.) Nov. 26, 1931, No. 32832. Convention date, Dec. 26, 1930. [Class 38 (ii).] An electronic frequency multiplier suitable for use at very high frequencies comprises electrostatic means for cyclically deflecting an electron stream so that it strikes in turn a number of anodes connected alternately to opposite sides of a tuned output circuit. As shown in Fig. 1, the input is generated by a short-wave oscillator 54 and is applied through feeders 56, 60, 62 to two pairs of plates 20, 22 and 24, 26 set orthogonally in the tube 2. The electron stream from the cathode 4 is thus caused to sweep out a conical path and to impinge in succession on a series of conductive targets 30 arranged on an insulating, ring 18. The targets are alternately connected to opposite sides of an output circuit 36, tuned to the multiple frequency. If the deflecting plates 20, 22 are situated the same distance along the tube as the plates 24, 26, they are energized in phase quadrature, but if the pairs of plates are displaced as shown, their relative phase is suitably adjusted, having regard to the time of passage of the electrons, by means of U-shaped slides 58 in the line 56. The electron stream is concentrated bv a negatively-charged annular screen 8 and a hollow cylindrical anode 10 positively charged by a source 12 through a resistance 14. The targets may be arranged in an elliptical or other curved path, and when a single pair of deflecting plates is employed, the targets may be in a straight line and so spaced that equal time intervals elapse between contacts with successive targets, Fig. 2 (not shown).
