Abstract
774,300. Cathode-ray tubes. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. May 21, 1954 [May 30; 1953], No. 15079/54. Class 39(1). A television receiver comprises means for producing a single elec tron beam and in order from the cathode means-preferably : a wire electrode 4-for splitting the beam into two parts means for focusing the beam portions to form focal spots which are closely adjacent or overlapping in a direction perpendicular to the direction of line near the focal spots lying within a region bounded by the distance between two adjacent lines of deflection, and means for scanning the fluorescent screen with the spots in phase. As shown a tungsten wire electrode 4 whose potential is less than the potential of the final anode 1 is disposed on the gun side of the final anode diaphragm 3. The desired potential of the wire 4 can be attained by connecting it to the final anode through resistance 5, or the secondary emissive properties of the wire can be utilized in which case the wire is still connected by a resistance or gas discharge gap to the anode. After the beam has been split, the split parts are focused by electromagnetic or electrostatic means and then deflected together by known scanning means. The wire 4 is parallel to the scanning lines if electrostatic focusing is used or is at 60 degrees to the scan lines if magnetic focusing is used. Prior art devices using elliptical scanning spots or spot wobble are referred to.
