Abstract
466,247. Coke ovens. PAVITT, W. H. Sept. 19, 1936, No. 25539. Convention date, Sept. 28, 1935. [Classes 51 (i) and 51 (ii)] In an underfired regenerative coke oven the air supply for the regenerators can be drawn in part from the basement space beneath the oven structure and in part from some other source, so that by varying the amounts from the two sources overcooling of the basement can be avoided. In one construction, Figs. 1-3 (not shown), the reversing-valves at the two sides of the battery are arranged in enclosed alleyways in communcation with the basement space. Doors control the admission of air to the alleyways and the basement space, and allow variation of the amount of air drawn through the latter. In the construction shown in Figs. 4, and 5 each reversing-valve has two damper-controlled air inlets O, OA leading respectively to the basement space and the side alleyway. The valve has two chambers IA and IB separated by a partition consisting of a full depth vertical wall I', and two half depth walls, I<8>, I<9> respectively above and below. an horizontal partition I<6>, so that the two chambers communicate respectively with upper and lower regenerator sole flues, as described in Specification 465,378. In another form, Fig. 7, air from the alleyways is admitted to the basement space through pipes OE having their damper-controlled lower ends O<13> arranged in proximity to the air inlets OD to the reversing-valves. The upper ends of the pipes OE are hooded to prevent entry of dust, and the inlets to the conduits OD are controlled by placing a variable number of strips or finger bars R across the recessed rectangular seatings O<12> at the inlets. In a further form, Fig. 10 (not shown), the pipe OE is connected to the conduit OD, and two valves are fitted one for controlling the pipe OE, and the other the admission of air to the conduit OD from the basement.
