Abstract
569,403. Coke ovens. COPPEE ET CIE, E. Aug. 29, 1939, No. 24810. Convention date, Nov. 24, 1938. [Class 51 (ii)] In a coke oven in which the walls are provided with vertical uptake flues communicating at the top with vertical downtake flues, the communication between the flues is divided intoat least three compartments disposed side by side and provided with means for preventing the passage of gases from the uptake flues to the downtake flues either by the lateral] compartments or by a compartment or compartments between the lateral compartments. As shown in Figs. 1 and 5, the communication between the upper ends of the flues 2, 3 is divided by partitions 4 into lateral compartments 7 and a central compartment 5. Sliding dampers 8 operated by means of a rod inserted through the usual sight holes 10 are operated to cause the gases to pass through the lateral or central compartments. The dampers have notches 14 in their meeting edges to permit inspection of the flame at the base of the flues. Figs. 7 and I show a modification in which the partition walls 4 are integral with the dampers 8. The dampers may be disposed vertically instead of horizontally.
