Abstract

466,143. Making foam. HAYCOCK, G. W. Nov. 27, 1935, No. 32852. [Class 47 (ii)] A device for generating foam comprises a rotary impeller 1 at the lower end of a hollow shaft 4 which, at its upper end, is connected to an electric motor-5 5 or other prime mover. The impeller has blades 2, Fig. 2, with an advanced discharge angle, and rotates within a casing 8, 9 which is secured to the lower end of a tubular casing 12 and is formed with suction openings 10 and with fixed blades 7 defining discharge openings. When the impeller is rotated, foaming liquid is drawn in by the openings 10, and mixes with air induced through a control valve 16, ports 17 in the shaft 4, and port 3 at the centre of rotation of the impeller. The casing 8, 9 may be fitted with a cowl 22 for directing the foam discharged by the impeller. Compressed air or other gas may be supplied to the port 3. The device shown is a portable unit adapted to stand, on a pad 21, in foaming liquid in a bath or other vessel in which a foam bath is to be produced. For fire-extinguishing the device is mounted in a closed vessel to which foaming liquid is supplied, if desired under control of an automatically regulated valve.
