Abstract
466,089. Parachutes. ROUSSELOT, M. Nov. 27, 1936, No. 32551. Convention date, Nov. 29, 1935. [Class 4] A parachute pack is closed by a flap connected to the back of the pack along its free sides by a number of independent closing-strings, each adapted to be severed by a cutter to permit opening of the pack. As shown, the back 1 of the pack is formed on a frame of piano wire, to which is secured, e.g. a sheet of veneer. Six side flaps 2, upper and lower flaps 3 and a closing flap 4 are secured to the back 1. The flaps 2 are fastened by strings 7 which are passed through cutters 8 secured to a braid 9. The flap 4 is provided with elastic bands 5, 6 and is fastened, to close the pack, by strings 12 passed through cutters 8 secured to braids 9. The cutters 8 are provided with a restriction 13 and a cutting edge 13a. The braids 9 are connected to the cable connecting the pilot parachute to the main parachute and are arranged so that the strings are severed successively. The pilot parachute may be ejected automatically or by hand. A strap 21 facilitates attachment of the pack to the wearer. In a modification, the pack comprises packs 18a, 18b, 18c connected together. The canopy is packed in the portion 18a by pleating during folding the end portions, as shown in Fig. 8. The rigging lines are packed and held by elastic loops in the portion 18b and the portion 18c houses the suspension line, shock-absorber, and safety cable, which are held in the pack by frangible connections. The pilot parachute is housed in a pack 23 provided on one of the shoulder straps and adapted to be opened manually or automatically. The packs 18a, 18b, 18c may be covered by a single flap and the pilot parachute may be placed in a pocket separate from the main pack. In a further form the pack housing the suspension cable &c. is placed on the harness belt, the pack housing the rigging lines is suspended from the belt, and the pack housing the canopy is carried on a thigh of the wearer.
