Parachutes.-In a parachute device adapted to be carried on the back of the aviator, the parachute cords D are connected by rings C to four straps 8 - - 11 forming extensions of the body harness, and the whole is folded up within a bag 1 provided with a cover 15 connected by a rope 14 to the aircraft, so that, when the aviator drops from his machine, the cover 15 is stripped off and the parachute pulled out top-first from the bag, as shown in Fig, 5. The straps 8 - - 11 are passed through slits T in the top end of the bag, and the cords D and parachute fabric P are folded back and forth as shown in Fig. 3, layers of paper U being inserted between the folds of the cords D. The top of the parachute is connected by cords F to a light rope 12 connected to the rope 14, which is secured to the cover 15 by bands 16, 17. A lining S attached to the cover is then tucked in around the parachute, and the cover and slits T secured by a breakable cord passed through eyelets. A rope ring C<2> is passed through the rings C to prevent them from spreading. When the parachute reaches the position shown in Fig. 5, the rope 12 breaks and the parachute expands. The body harness comprises straps 2, 3, Fig. 2, passed over the shoulders and attached to a belt B, below which they extend to leg-straps L, L<2>, to which are attached other straps 2<c>, 3<c> also secured to the belt B. In a modified arrangement, the harness is omitted and a waist-belt is worn by the aviator, the parachute, device being attached to the belt, when a descent is to be made, by means of a snap-hook at the end of a rope secured at its other end to the cords D and the bag 1.
