[Class 97 (i)] Relative movements of shutter members to obtain fade-out and like effects are produced by mechanism driven by the motor of the apparatus and controlled by a bent lever ; the speed of the relative movements may be variable, and means for producing them manually may be provided. The shutter members may comprise discs 1, 2, respectively carried by hubs 4, 5 frictionally mounted on a longitudinally-movable shaft 3 having a pin extending into a longitudinal slit in the hub 5 and into a helical slit in the hub 4. A fork 28 on a shaft 26 engages a grooved ring 6 on the shaft 3 ; rocking movement of the shaft 26 thus causes longitudinal movement of the shaft 3 and variation of the shutter opening. The shaft 26 may be rocked by a crank 27 linked to a rod 31 guided by a shaft 18 and moved by a pin 32 engaging a cam groove 22 in a disc 21. The disc 21 may be rotated by the motor through gears 9, 10, change-speed gearing 16, 17, and a gear 20, or by hand through a knob 19 on the shaft 18. The change-speed gears 16, 17 are carried on a frame 14 pivoted on the shaft 11 and normally supported by the end 23 of one arm of a bent lever 24 held by a spring 25 but capable of being depressed by a rod carrying a push button 34. Depression of the lever 24 permits the wheel 17 to engage and drive the gear 20, thus causing relative rotation of the shutter members, first to reduce and close the shutter opening, and then, during the completion of one rotation of the gear 20, to open it to the original extent. The other arm of the lever 24 terminates in a finger 38 normally engaging a nose 37 of a cam 30 loose on the shaft 26. The cam is linked to the pin of the crank 27 by a spring 36<1> and moves with it when released by movement of the finger 38 ; the curved surface of the cam 30 then engages the finger 38 and prevents the return of the lever, and consequent disengagement of the gears 17, 20, until one rotation of the gear 20 has been completed. The gears 17 are integral with one another, and the gears 16 may be coupled singly to the shaft 11, variation of the coupling, to effect change of speed, being obtained by operation of the knob 43. A modification is described in which the cam 30 is replaced by a sliding shoe.
