745,143. Change-speed gearing. COLLARO, Ltd., COLLARO, C., and HUMBY, E. T. Dec. 2, 1953 [Dec. 23, 1952], No. 32663/52. Class 80(2) Toothed or friction change-speed gearing, shown as friction gearing for driving a gramophone turntable, comprises a stepped driving wheel 10 engaged by a laterally and axially displaceable idler wheel 16 engaging in its turn the rim 17 of the turntable. The idler 16 rotates on a spindle on a arm 21 pivoting about a spindle 22 on a bracket 19 itself mounted on a pivot 20. A cam follower 41 on the spindle 20 coacts with a cam surface 37...40 on a cam 25 rotatable about a spindle 26 to move the idler 16, &c. axially and thus change the velocity ratio. A pin 32 on the bracket 19 is engaged by one arm 31 of a pivoted bell crank lever carrying on its other arm 29 a second cam follower 30 engaging a cam surface 34...36 on the cam 25, and so arranged that on rotating the cam to move the idler axially the idler 16 is moved laterally out of engagement with the stepped driving wheel 10 and reengaged therewith when opposite the next step. Springs 42, 30a maintain the cam followers in engagement with the cam surfaces and a spring 23 connected to the bracket 19 biases the idler wheel to engage the stepped driving wheel and turntable. As shown, the cam 25 is of unit construction, the surface 37...40 comprising three steps with two interconnecting slopes, but alternatively two separate cams can be interconnected for simultaneous operation.
