Abstract
465,380. Oil-break switches; contacts. WHITEHEAD, G. E., and WHITEHEAD'S ELECTRICAL INVENTIONS, Ltd. Feb. 19, 1936, No. 5089. [Class 38 (v)] A switch or circuitbreaker has its " fixed " contact located in a perforation in a partition or barrier across the oil tank but leaving one or more channels which is or are adapted to be nearly closed by a valve except when the switch or breaker contacts are closed. As applied to the circuit-breaker described in Specification 464,643, in which the "fixed" contact 3 is urged towards the movable contact 2 by a spring 8 and is in sliding engagement with a resilient sleeve contact 6, for example of the character described in Specification 409,085, in a tubular extension 7 of the terminal stem 4, the valve is in the form of a flanged member 15 carried by the pin 10 which engages slots 9 in the extension 7 to limit the travel of contact 3. The flange is provided with recesses 16 which are staggered with respect to longitudinal pressure-relieving grooves 14 formed in the tube 7. There is a slight clearance between 7 and the insulating shrouding tube 11 which is housed in perforations in cross-barriers 12, 13 in the switch-tank. When open, the valve allows free access between both sides of the partitions, and when the breaker opens, the valve causes the oil under the partitions to be placed under pressure, the oil only slowly escaping through the perforations. With excessive pressure the valve is lifted, but in any case the oil flows back through the tube when normal conditions are restored. Perforations may replace the recesses 14, 16.
