Abstract

464,643. Oil - break switches; contacts. WHITEHEAD, G. E., and WHITEHEAD'S ELECTRICAL INVENTIONS, Ltd. Oct. 23, 1935, No. 29304. [Class 38 (v)] In an oil-switch or circuit-breaker having fixed and moving butt contacts through which the current is normally carried when the switch is closed, the moving butt contact is rigidly carried on its moving support or bridge by a relatively short and light stem, and the fixed butt contact is resiliently mounted on its support and is slidably carried in a resilient sleeve contact through which the current mainly flows. As applied to a doublebreak oil-switch, the " fixed butt contact 3 has a rigid stem 5 slidable within a resilient sleeve contact 6, for example of the character described in Specification 409,085, and urged by a spring 8 towards the movable contact 2 which is fast on the bridge-member 1. The parts are carried in a tubular extension 7 of the terminal stem 4, said extension being slotted at 9 to receive a pin 10 on the stem 5 so as to limit the travel of contact 3. An insulating shrouding tube 11 carried in perforations in transverse barriers 12, 13 in the tank, surrounds the tube 7 with slight clearance, in order to relieve gas-pressure, and grooves 14 are formed in the tube 7 to allow oil and arc-gases to escape. The pin 10 carries a flange member 15 which moves with contact 3 and acts as a valve which opens when the breaker is closed and vice versa. The member 15 may be provided with recesses 16 which are staggered with respect to the grooves 14, Fig. 2. Specifications 414,491 and 465,380 also are referred to.
