Abstract
493,640. Oil -blast switches; switch contacts. WHITEHEAD, G. E., and WHITEHEAD'S ELECTRICAL INVENTIONS, Ltd. May 7, 1937, No. 13159. [Class 38 (v)] The main current carrying fixed contact in or for a circuit-breaker is of the resilientsleeve type and carried at the mouth of a metal housing, the co-operating main moving contact is in the form of a tubular plug carrying within its bore a spring-urged arcing-contact in the form of a plunger engageable with an arcing-contact surface in the housing above the resilient sleeve contact. In Fig. 1, a metal housing 3 carried on the contact-stem 1 is enlarged at 4 to form a casing for a circularlylaminated, main fixed contact 5, as in Specification 409,085, and is threaded to receive an enlarged part 14 carrying the renewable fixed-arcing contact 13. The main moving plug contact 6 carries in a central bore an arcing contact plunger 9 which is urged upwards by a spring 10 in the bore surrounding a stem 11. The housing 3 acts as an explosion pot, and is disposed in an insulating shrouding tube 15 in a perforation in a plate 16 extending across the oil tank of the breaker. In Fig. 3, the plunger 9 slides in a resilient sleeve contact 18 similar to 5, and spring 10 is replaced by external springs 19 on guide rods 20 on a plate 21 fixed to the plunger. Oil may be pumped upwards through the housing 3 during opening of the breaker. Specification 392,930 also is referred to. The Provisional Specification states also that the arcing plunger may engage a laterally-projecting arcing- contact in the housing, as in the above-mentioned Specifications.
