464,612. Cam mechanism ; linkwork. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Aug. 14, 1936, No. 22412. Convention date, Aug. 16, 1935. [Class 80 (iii)] [Also in Group XXVII] A hydraulic device for automatically taking up slack in valve - actuating or other mechanism comprises a piston 19 slidable in a cylinder 16 and fitted loosely at 20 with a thrust member 21, 18 formed with a shoulder 28 which acts as a valve in conjunction with the piston 19, to admit oil to the space beneath the piston, a spring 30 being provided which maintains the shoulder 28 raised as shown in Fig. 2, when the valve 40 to be operated is closed. When the cam 12 comes into action to open the valve 40, the cylinder 16 and piston 19 are raised to seat the shoulder 28 and actuate the thrust member 21, 18. The spring 30 acts on a flange 26 of a sleeve 24 which is made a press-fit on the member 21, the flange being grooved at 27 for flow of oil. The thrust member may be fitted with a tubular guide member 32 working in the upper part of the cylinder 16. Oil is supplied to the upper side of the piston at 46, 44.
