Abstract
463,859. Discharge apparatus. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN. Nov. 18, 1936, No. 31608. Convention date, Nov. 21. 1935. Addition to 456,243. [Class 39 (i)] In a single-phase mercury-vapour rectifier in which the joint between the glass and metal parts of the container is protected from the discharge, as claimed in the parent Specification 456,243, the metal part of the container is cooled by a circulating liquid and the glass part is jacketed by a vessel which contains an electrically insulating cooling liquid. The. rectifier comprises a metal part 1, which contains the cathode 3, and a glass part 2 to which is secured a. ferro-chromium hood 4 adapted to support a cylindrical anode 5 through a member 8. Insulating bushes 12, 13, a tubular metal screen 14, and an insulating tube 15 surround the support. An extension of the glass part is sealed by a ferro-chromium disc 6 which is connected to an ignition anode 7 by a stud 9, iron pole pieces 16, 17, connected by a spring 18, and a rod 19 housed in an insulating tube 20. The rod 19 and tube 20 are slidable in a tube 21 housed in a recess in the anode, and the ignition anode is lifted to strike the arc by means of a winding 24. A metal cylinder 22 screens the joint between the metal and glass parts 1, 2 from the discharge. The metal part 1 is housed in a cooling jacket 29 and is spaced therefrom by a flange 25 on the jacket. The glass part 2 is surrounded by a, jacket 26 which is secured to the jacket 29 and is filled with an insulating liquid. The jacket 26 is provided with terminals, a safety valve 32 and a cock 31. A terminal stud 27 secures the rectifier to the jacket 29. The glass part 2 is maintained at a uniform temperature, e.g. 70‹ C., which is preferably 40‹ C. higher than of the metal part 1.
