Abstract

474,203. Mercury-vapour rectifiers. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN. March 17, 1937, No. 7877. Convention date, March 20, 1936. Addition to 456,243. [Class 39 (i)] In a single-phase mercury rectifier as claimed in the parent Specification, at least one member is provided between the anode and cathode to render impossible a straight path therebetween. A rectifier comprises a container, which has a metal portion 1, Fig. 1, and a glass portion 2, an anode 7, a mercury cathode 3, and an ignition anode 4. The joint 15 is screened from the discharge by a molybdenum member 14 closed at its upper end. Molybdenum rings 17, 18 and a nickel member 16 locate the cathode spot and a terminal bolt 19 secures the vessel to a cooling jacket 20. The ignition anode 4 is supported by a conductor 8, housed in an insulating tube 9 and secured to an iron polepiece 10, which is secured to another polepiece 12 through a spring 11. A winding 13 surrounds the polepieces. The arc path is curved by means of a disc 24 and a ring 23 secured to the metal portion 1. The arc may be controlled by potentials applied to the disc 24. In another form, cooling members 33, 41, Fig. 2, pass through the anode and cathode respectively and support, and also form leading-in conductors for, the discs 37, 46. The anode 26 is screwed to a metal member 27 which is sealed to the glass part 29 and is sealed through a glass part 38 to the metal part 39. Starting is facilitated by a highresistance rod 31. The cooling member 41 and the jacket 39 are connected in series. In another form, partitions may project into the discharge path from opposite directions.
