Abstract
463,686. Launching torpedoes. PAINE, H. SCOTT-. June 20, 1935, No. 17755. [Class 9 (ii)] A torpedo 10, Figs. 1 and 3, is held on an inclined slipway 15 on a vessel by a latch 20 or other releasable means adapted to be operated by the speed controlling device of the vessel, so that the latch is released at the same time as the vessel is accelerated positively or negatively, whereby the inertia of the torpedo causes or assists its launching movement down the slipway. As shown, the slipway is provided with two pairs of rails 13, 14 of different gauge for wheels 11, 12 on the torpedo, and with keeper rails 22 over the wheels. An extension slipway 18 with corresponding rails is hinged at 19, so that it can be swung overboard to align with the slipway 15. The rails 13, 14 end at different distances designed to release the front of the torpedo first, to facilitate the submersion of the torpedo. The latch 20 is thrown off by a spring when released by a detent pulled by a cord 21 connected to a lever 27, Fig. 4, adjacent the throttle lever 28 of the vessel. A pin 29 may be set to couple the two levers together when the torpedo is to be launched. The expulsion of the torpedo down the slipway may be helped by rubber cords or steel springs attached'to a cap engaging the inboard end of the torpedo.
