Abstract
961,871. Towed submarines. M. E. LAWRIE. Oct. 25, 1961 [Oct. 26, 1960], No. 38132/61. Headings B7A and B7V. A submarine for underwater exploration comprises a cylindrical hull 11, a cylindrical observation panel 12 fixed between two rings 47, 48, and a hatch 14 secured to the upper ring 48 by a bow-shaped member 53. The tow rope 20 passes round pins 19, one on each side of the hull, and one or each of these pins may be withdrawn into the hull to release the towrope by a spring 81 (Fig. 6), when the footoperated bar 78 is moved (Fig. 3). Two vanes 27 are provided for depth control, each operable either by a hand wheel 41 through a chain and sprockets or by remote control from the towing vessel. A rudder 60, operable by a rudder bar 72 through a chain 73 and sprocket 71 may also be provided. The submarine preferably tows a marker buoy, which also serves as an air reservoir.
