Abstract

461,707. Valves. ELLOR, J. E. Oct. 30, 1935, No. 29962. [Class 135] [Also in Group XIII] A valve device for controlling the byepass of an engine oil cooler has two passage-ways each controlled by a valve member one of the valve members being controlled by a thermostatic device while the other is opened by the oil pressure acting against resilient means. The valves and passage-ways are so arranged that the thermostatic control will not affect the pressure-actuated valve nor will the oil pressure substantially affect the thermally controlled valve. In the form shown in the Figure a tubular valve seat member C is inserted in the byepass passage and has apertures C<1> in its side walls adapted to be controlled by a reciprocating valve member H. This valve member has a sleeve part G<1> adapted to be secured by a nut G<2> to a rod G secured to a thermal capsule F adjustably secured to the casing by a screwed tail carrying a nut F<3> clamped against the end of the casing by a cap F2. The periphery of the member H is chamfered to correspond with a similar chamfer on the seat and is provided with large holes H<1> so that fluid pressure acts on both sides substantially balancing the valve when open and completely when closed. The pressure relieving valve comprises a disc D loaded by a spring D<1> and guided to seat on the end of the seat member by a ported flange engaging the outside of the seat. Centrally the disc has an aperture fitted with a soft metal washer J adapted to engage slidably with the sleeve G<1> According to the Provisional Specification the two valves may be arranged in separate conduits.
