Abstract
520,992. Valves. HURST, W. F. F. MARTIN-, and BRITISH THERMOSTAT CO., Ltd. Aug. 8, 1938, Nos. 23376/38 and 10497/39. [Class 135] A valve-device particularly for the cooling- system of aircraft engines comprises a valvemember which can open in opposition to a thermally-sensitive chamber to relieve excessive pressure, and co-operates with a movable valve-' seat for admitting air to the system when the pressure falls. The valve shown in the Figure is enclosed in a casing 1, 2 which communicates through openings A, 3 with the cooling-system and an air-outlet pipe. A valve-disc 10 cooperates with a seat 8 on a disc 7 carried by a bellows 4 which is mounted in a holder 5 provided with a stop-ring 9 for the bellows. The valve-disc carries another bellows 13 provided with a cup 14 having a threaded stem 15 carrying a sleeve 16 which can slide in a threaded bush 17 in the casing. The bellows communicates with a phial 11 which is attached to the valvedisc and passes through a guide 12. The phial is heated by the system and contains the same liquid as that in the system, or contains a liquid having a slightly higher or lower boiling point than that in the system. A spring 23 is arranged between tne cup 14 and a collar 24 which abuts on a flange 25 on the sleeve 16. Another spring 22 is arranged between the casing and a hood 20 attached to the valve-disc. When the system warms . up, the valve-disc is opened in opposition to the spring 22 to allow escape of air, and when the collar 24 abuts on the bush 17, the pressure in the bellows 13 aids the spring to close the valve-disc. When the maximum pressure is exceeded, the spring 23 yields and the valve acts as a safetyvalve. When the system cools, the bellows 4 yields and the valve-disc opens to admit air into the system.
