Abstract

499,857. Valves; thermostats. BRITISH THERMOSTAT CO., Ltd., and HURST, W. F. F. MARTIN. Nov. 2, 1937, No. 31905 /36. [Class 135] [Also in Group XIII] Thermostatic valve apparatus for regulating the cooling of internal-combustion engines in a, manner independent of the atmospheric pressure, comprises a bellows 18 containing a volatile liquid coupled by rods 22 with a second sealed bellows 19 containing air. When the engine is cold, the parts are situated as shown. When it begins to warm up, cooling liquid rises through the inlet 2 past the bellows 19, through holes in a partition 17, to which both bellows are secured, past the bellows 18, through holes 11a in a valve member 11 and away by a pipe 4 back to the engine. As the temperature rises, the pressure in the bellows 18 rises more rapidly than that in bellows 19 and a valve 7, carried by a stem 8 mounted on the top of bellows 18, is raised to open the exit 3 to the radiator. At the same time a seat 10a on the valve 11 approaches a seat 10 on the casing and gradually cuts off the liquid from the pipe 4. Expansion of the bellows 19 is limited by stops 23 on a frame 23a. The upper bellows are charged with liquid through a bore in the stem 8 which is afterwards sealed at the upper end. The lower bellows are charged with air through a pipe 22a which is afterwards sealed.
