Abstract
850,297. Valves. SEAMARK, L. M. C. July 28, 1958 [Sept. 24, 1957], No. 30014/57. Class 135. In a plug valve 2, Fig. 1, the plug 1 is balanced in its closed position by providing in the valve body, means whereby the pressure on each side of the plug is transmitted to the other side. An inclined passage 7 in the valve body extends from the port at the right side of the plug to one end of an arcuate horizontal channel 8, Fig. 3, the other end of which projects upwards into an arcuate space 9, Fig. 1, opening on to the plug 1. The space 9 which is below the adjacent fluid port is connected by a channel (not shown) to a similar space 11 above the said fluid port. The fluid pressure on the left side of the plug is transmitted by a similar system of passage 7<1>, 81 to spaces 9<1>, 11<1> on the right side of the plug. The valve is thus operable to control the fluid flow in either direction. The passages and spaces may be filled with grease or oil which acts as a transmitting medium for the pressures and as a lubricant for the valve plug. The plug which has an operating member 6 is vertically adjustable by means of a screw-threaded member 12 in the base-plate 3. In a modification the base-plate 3 is replaced by another operating member and a dished spring washer is provided for urging the plug upwardly. The plug may be cylindrical in form.
