Abstract

460,327. Fuel - injection puraps. BRISTOL AEROPLANE CO., Ltd., FEDDEN, A. H. R., and MANSELL, S. W. Nov. 27, 1935, No. 32942. [Class 102 (i)] A fuel-injection pump comprises two banks of five cylinders arranged at an angle to each other and one cylinder is employed as a lubricating pump for lubricating the assembly. Each pair of fuel-injection pump cylinders comprises plungers 16 pressed by springs 17 on to rocker arms 19 engaging a cam 23. The pump delivery is stopped by a byepass valve 31 actuated by the rocking lever 19 which is mounted on a pivot eccentrically arranged on a shaft 20 or 21 which is rotated to vary the pump delivery. The cam shaft 24 is connected by a vernier coupling 51 to a sleeve 52 having straight splines engaging similar splines in an intermediate shaft 53 connected by helical splines 54 to the driving shaft 55. A c.ontrol lever 49 is mounted on a shaft 48 carrying a gear wheel meshing with a gear wheel 46 on the shaft 21. The shafts 20, 21 are connected by cranks and a rod arranged externally to the casing. The shaft 48 also carries a cam 61 co-operating with a forked lever 56 pivoted at 57 and connected to the shaft 53 to adjust it axially to vary the time of injection. The cam 61 is shaped to obtain a correct timing and to compensate for variations in timing that result in the adjusting of the rocking lever fulcrum and the resultant movement in the direction of the lever axis. Stops 64, 65 are provided to determine the full load and stop position of the lever 49 and a stop 70 carried by a lever 71 determines the idling speed.
