Abstract
421,266. Gearing for converting reciprocating into rotary motion. BONFA, A., 608, Umbilo Road, Durban, South Africa. March 13, 1933, No. 7635. [Class 80 (i)] [See also Group XXVII] In engines in which the crank-shaft 6 is eccentric to the main-shaft 16, and the crankpin 15 describes a hypotrochoidal curve, an externally toothed wheel 70 journalled on the main shaft 16 is engaged by a pinion 71, of one-third the size, on a shaft 73 journalled in an enlargement of the shaft 16. Engaging pinions 72, 91 are keyed to the shafts 73, 6 respectively. Cam-sleeves 81, 82 operate the exhaust and inlet valve lifters 18, 19. Each sleeve is formed with a key working in a slot in the shaft, and engaging either side of a stop according to the direction of rotation. The key on sleeve 81 extends through 190 degrees and that on sleeve 82 through 10 degrees. The stop comprises hinged arms which may be forced apart for varying the timing, the pinion 70 being adjustable for this purpose, as well as for varying the compression ratio and for reversing, through an angle of from 38 to 42‹. A pin 74 in the pinion engages at one end cam surfaces in the adjoining bearing and at the other end a plate 75. Angular adjustment of the pinion 70 thus slides a rod 76 and tilts a lever 77 the end of which rests between the arms of the hinged stop for the feather keys of the sleeves 81, 82. Ignition contacts are carried by the mainshaft 16 and the wheel 70. Specifications 346,592, and 372,544, [Group XXVII], are referred to.
