Abstract

418,764. Four-stroke engines ; valve gear. SCOTT, B. D., Camp, Miserden, near Stroud, Gloucestershire. June 15, 1933, No. 17034. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi).] In a four-stroke engine of the type in which a pair of pistons are subject to the same impulse, separate inlet and exhaust valves c are actuated by cams k preferably acting directly on the valves and each provided with two lobes so as to be rotated at half the usual speed. The two cam shafts may be driven by a spider or frame l, Fig. 2, and crank discs q, n, the latter being a gear wheel meshing with a pinion o on the crank shaft. An extension of the frame l may actuate a pump or other part by means of a crank r. A second frame s driven by a crank t may actuate other cranks u, v associated with the magneto, water-circulating pump, dynamo, &c. One of the pistons e, Fig. 1, has its connecting-rod h attached to a pivot i on the other connecting-rod g, the pivot being in front of the rod g considered with regard to the direction of rotation.
