Abstract
624,301. Valve gear. SADLER, D. V. July 1, 1947, No. 17261. [Class 7 (vi)] A sleeve valve for a two stroke engine is operated by a crank or eccentric 1, Fig. 1, on a crankshaft 2 through a link 3 engaging one end of a lever 5 connected by a ball and socket connection to the valve 7 and pivoted at 8, the link 3 having a guiding slot 13 cooperating with a block 12 on a pin 11. A pipe 14 conveys oil to lubricate the surfaces of the pin 11, block 12, and slot 13. In a modification, Fig. 3, the lever 5, connected to the link 3, is pivoted at 8 in a rotatable bearing 17 fixed in a slide 15 the bearing 17 being connected by an arm 18, pivoted lever 20, and link 21, to the link 3. As the link 3 reciprocates, the lever 20 is partly rotated about its pivot 11 to reciprocate the slide 15, thereby moving the pivot 8 to increase the rate of opening and closing of the valve controlled ports. In a modification the slide 15 is connected to an eccentric mounted on an auxiliary shaft which is rotated, for reciprocation of the slide, by a connection to the link 3. In a radial engine, a main eccentrically operated link is connected to links operating the remaining valves, all of the links having slots co-operating with guiding blocks. For a four-stroke engine, the cranks or eccentrics actuating the links may be driven from the main engine shaft through two-to-one reduction gearing, or eccentrics mounted on the main shaft may be used with epicyclic reduction gearing.
