Abstract

1,029,348. I.C. engine valve gear; lubricating. C. N. McL. WORNELL. Dec. 15, 1964 [Dec. 4, 1964], No. 49354/64. Heading FIB. In an I.C. engine having a freely-pivoted rocker arm 17 connected to a valve element 12, the opposite edges of the rocker arm are engaged by rotary cams 22, 23 to cause a reciprocatory motion of the rocker arm. Rocker arm 17 has a peg end 19 which engages a slotted arm 16 keyed to the stem 15 of the taper cup valve 12. A spring holds the valve 32 in engagement with the cylinder head 11. The cams are rotated by gears meshing with gear 26 which is mounted freely rotatable on or keyed to shaft 18 and driven by chain and sprocket from shaft 24. In another embodiment Fig. 3 (not shown) poppet valves are operated by cams arranged so that one set of cams act on a portion of the rocker arm which is on the opposite side of the pivot from the valve-operating end and another set of cams act on a rocker arm between the pivot and the valve operating end. In modifications the end of the rocker arm may be arranged to co-operate with a valve engagement arm having an internally-radiused elongated slot or in the form of an adjustable split-reel arm or adjustable socket. In further modifications the pivot ends of pairs of rocker arms are forked or hinged together or cranked and arranged side by side on the rocker arm shaft. Lubrication. Oil is supplied through ducts 2 to cams 22, 23 and end 19. Oil directed to grooves 27 from thrower washer 34 spills over to lubricate the driving gear. Pressure oil is pumped past adjusting screw 3 and flows via pipe 4, oil-way 5 to groove 7 which feeds groove 6 and ducts 8. Grooves 9 in the cylinder head register with ducts 8 to lubricate valve 12 and oil passes down grooves 9 into groove 10 and duct 40 to drain to the sump.
