Abstract

459,667. Valves. GAS LIGHT & COKE CO., DOUGILL, G., and ROGERS, C. W. M., 84, Horseferry Road, Westminster. July 12, 1935, No. 20017. [Class 135] A gas valve comprising a freely suspended sleeve immersed at its lower end in a liquid seal and adapted at its upper end to co-operate with a valve seat to control a lateral outlet port has means for shielding the greater part of the sleeve from lateral gas currents, and for distributing the flow of gas substantially uniformly around the edge of the sleeve. The Figure shows the invention applied to a retort house governor, in which the valve spindle 27 is coupled by straps to quadrants on lever 32, 33. The lever 33 has a second quadrant coupled by a strap to an annular actuating bell 30 subject to gas pressure. The lever 32 carries a pair of spaced quadrants coupled by straps to the bell to give a three point suspension. The tubular valve member which cooperates with a conical seat 13 is coupled to the valve spindle 27 by a spider 26, and works in a liquid seal formed between the inlet conduit 15, and an intermediate wall 16 spaced away from the outer wall of the casing. Both walls extend into the proximity of the valve seat and above the side discharge passage 18. A double conical throttling ring is arranged above the side passage which serves the double purpose of ensuring even flow around the top of the sleeve and of encouraging the deposition of tar &c. which trickles down into the annular space outside sleeve 16 where it is withdrawn together with overflow from the seal through a pipe 24. Tar finding its way into the seal may be withdrawn through a pipe 46. Steam may be introduced into the seal and the gas chamber may be additionally heated by a steam coil. In a modification the outlet is arranged above the valve seat which is arranged on a tubular stem depending from the bottom of the bell chamber. Specification 395,443 is referred to.
