Abstract
532,465. Pressure-regulating valves. GROVE, M. H. July 24, 1939, No. 21494. Convention date, Oct. 10, 1938. [Class 135] A pressure-regulating device for delivering steam or similar fluid at a constant pressure is constructed with a valve 14 between the inlet pipe 11 and supply pipe 12, and the valve is controlled by a diaphragm 21, preferably of synthetic rubber, which is controlled by a chamber 46 containing compressed air and also by the steam pressure in a chamber 36 connected by a passage 37, port 59, and pipe 58 to the steam outlet pipe 13. The chamber 36 is preferably formed with fins 23a for radiating heat, and above the diaphragm 21 is a metal disc 44 with a bevelled edge 44a the maximum diameter of which is slightly less than that of a recess 60a into which it is expanded by the pressure of the air in chamber 46 which is admitted through passages 48, 47 under control of a needle valve 49. A central boss of the disc 44 supports a rod 39 which is guided by a bush 42 supported by radial webs 43, and by a bush 41 supported by flanges 32, 34, which connect the valve body to the chamber 36 and are so designed as to prevent a great flow of heat from the valve to the chamber 36. In working, this chamber is adapted to contain condensed steam so that the diaphragm is covered with water, or if the fluid under control is injurious to the diaphragm the chamber may contain a layer of liquid which has no injurious action. To prevent abrupt movements of the diaphragm 21 a rigid baffle wall 52 is secured below it with a slight clearance, and it is provided with a small aperture 54 and a plurality of webs 56. The valve seating 15 is maintained in position by a removable ported sleeve 16, and the valve is of inverted conical form and is urged on to its seat by a light spring 19. In modifications (a) the chamber 36 is formed with an extra set of cooling fins larger than the fins 23a, Fig. 1; and (b) the dome 22 is surrounded by a container filled with a cooling liquid such as water, the container being suspended by straps from the flanges 32, 34. Specification 447,519 is referred to.
