Abstract

458,611. Cooling charge. BRISTOL AEROPLANE CO., Ltd., FEDDEN, A. H. R., and ANDERSON, G. O., Filton House, Bristol. Aug. 29, 1935, No. 24158. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (iii)] To prevent overheating of the charge in an engine using a centrifugal supercharging fan 10, water, or a liquid having a high latent heat of vaporization is admitted near to the centre of the fan casing. The water is preferably admitted only when the pressure and/or strength of the charge delivered by the fan exceeds a certain value. In Fig. 1, a cock 41, connected to the throttle-controlling lever 23 of a variable-datum boost-control, is opened to admit water through a ring-shaped pipe 39 to jets 38 near the impellor-eye 19 when an abnormally high pressure is produced. In a modified construction the lever 23 operates a needle valve to admit water to the pipe 39, the water being maintained at a constant pressure, irrespective of the degree to which the valve is opened, by a gear pump provided with a pressure-relief valve. In another construction, Fig. 2, the cock 41 is interconnected with the manually-operated override 46 of a fixed-datum boost-control operated by a lever 23 and/or with a lever 52 which opens a valve 53 to supply additional fuel to a jet 55 in the carburetter. To prevent the water freezing, the water tank and pipes may be jacketed with the engine cooling liquid or with lubricating oil ; or an anti-freezing substance may be added to the water. The Provisional Specification states that the admission of water may be controlled by a device responsive to the pressure or temperature of the charge delivered by the blower to the engine. Specifications 449,340 and 450,047 are referred to.
