458,493. Coaster &c. hubs. ZUCKER, P., 11, Lavaterstrasse, Zurich, Switzerland. March 13, 1935, No. 7850. Void [Abridged as open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Sept. 14, 1935]. [Class 136 (ii)] [See also Group XXXIV] An internal hub brake for bicycles comprises a helical spring band 9 which for braking is adapted to be unwound and expanded against the interior of the hub. A helical spring 10 is simultaneously expanded and is adapted to press against the interior of the band 9 and prevent deformation. The springs 9, 10 are fixed at one end in a fixed bearing cone 2 and at the other end in a bearing cone 4 adapted to be turned on the axle 1 by a lever 5 to produce braking. A helical cooling fin 13 is provided. In a modification, the helical springs are arranged in a drum forming part of the hub and operated by a lever journalled in the cover plate of the drum and acting on a lever pivoted about the axis of the hub and engaging one end of the springs. In a modification of this latter form, the brake is operated by a coupling member adapted to move on a screw on the axle in such a manner that on forward pedalling the drive is engaged and on back-pedalling the brake is applied.
